The Raw Diet: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 5. Making The
Switch: Dogs Most dogs can be switched from kibble to raw
either “ cold turkey” or over a 7 day period. Slow Transition to Raw
When beginning the raw diet it is recommended that both a
good quality human grade pre-biotic (digestive enzyme) as well as a
pro-biotic ( friendly bacteria) be added
to the diet. This is to give the body help in building up its
level of digestive enzymes and friendly bacteria. Digestive enzymes and
pro-biotic may be used daily or a few times a week.
Never cook bones before feeding as they may splinter and
break off into pieces that may cause perforations in the digestive
system. Making the
Switch: Cats Cats unlike dogs are generally more difficult to switch. Cats by nature are suspicious of any change and those on kibble are actually addicted to the flavor enhancers in the kibble. Some cats can be readily switched within days but others take weeks. Cats on wet canned foods are easier to switch than cats eating only dry food. If your cat is eating wet food then find a food that he/she really likes such as fish (mackerel, tuna or sardines) I prefer either sardines or mackerel, or ground chicken, turkey, beef or ground organ meats. Add a small amount (1/8- ¼ tsp). at a time of the new food to the wet food. If the cat accepts this, every day add a bit more until half of the food is the new food. Then start to add ¼ tsp. of the Paws and Claws Pet Pantry Kitty Turkey Dinner to the mixture which includes the wet commercial food as well as the new food the cat liked. If the cat accepts this, then every couple of days add more of the Kitty Turkey Dinner. Once the food consists of at least half of the Kitty Turkey Dinner cut out the fish or ground meat from the wet food. After a few days gradually cut back on the wet commercial food so that eventually there is only the Kitty Turkey Dinner in the bowl. If the cat is only on dry cat food then a different approach is to be taken. Again find a canned fish food that the cat likes and add a bit of the liquid from the can to the dry food to moisten the kibble. Once the cat accepts this add a bit of the fish, moistening the kibble a little more each day until it is the consistency of wet food with the liquid from the canned fish. If the cat does not like fish, use ground chicken, beef or turkey and wet the kibble with water. Once the cat is used to eating the dry food in a moist form then switching can proceed as with wet food outlined above. If the cat is eating wet food one meal and kibble the other meal, then proceed the switch with the wet food. Once the switch is made then simply cut out the dry food and give the Kitty Turkey Dinner for both meals. Do not free feed. Do not leave the fresh raw kitty turkey dinner in the bowl all day. Cats prefer fresh food and will not readily eat old food. To ensure a minimal of waste only put out as much as the cat will eat. The Kitty Turkey Dinner should sit in the fridge for a maximum of 2 days. To minimize waste, when the frozen bags are lightly thawed just to the point of being able to be readily cut with a sharp knife (still slightly frozen), portion out the amounts you want to feed, and then place on a sheet, freeze and put in freezer bags for convenient usable portions.
