Our Very Own Rescues:

  • Cisco
Cisco, a hound and shepherd mix, was 8 months old when Alicia rescued him from a household of drug addicts who got their thrills by abusing him.  Considering his treatment at the hands of his owners it is amazing what a wonderful little dog he is.  When Alicia got him he was skinny with dry skin and bad breath and gas.  Cisco was immediately put on Paws and Claws Pet Pantry's meals.  Within weeks he attained his ideal weight, his skin and coat improved, his gas and bad breath disappeared.  Today, in his second year, Cisco has a bundle of energy which will be put to good use in his agility classes.

  • Zeus
Zeus, a 10 year old Doberman was literally rescued from imminent death over 4 years ago.  He was the product of a bitter divorce custody battle and rather than allow each other access to their dog they took him to the vet to be put down.  Fortunately Alicia was able to give Zeus a loving permanent home.  Today he shares his life with Cisco and the rest of Alicia's menagerie.  Soon after Alicia brought Zeus home, she discovered that he had Wobblers but is doing great at 10 years old being fed a fresh food diet.

  • Mister
Mister was 13 years old when his owners took him to the vet and for no reason at all never came back for him. The vet clinic tried on two occasions to adopt him out but on both occasions he was returned.  The homes he was placed in had other cats and the older Mister just did not fit into their already present animal hierarchy.  Alicia was a co-op student at the vet clinic and when Mister was returned the second time the vet said due to his age he would have to be put down.

Alicia, at that time lived with her parents who had two dogs, and she had no idea if Mister would get along in a household of canines.  She would daily place him in front of the dog crates at the clinic to see how he would react.  When there was no adverse reaction from the cat she decided to home him herself.  She could not allow him to be put down.

She snuck him into her parents home hoping no one would notice the new addition.  Of course he was noticed, but readily blended into the household just as Alicia had hoped.  Mister is now 18 years old and going strong.  He switched over to Paws and Claws Pet Pantry’s Kitty Dinner within months.  He shares his home with Kayla the cat and two dogs, Storrie and Sarah.

  • Kayla
Kayla was the sickest in her litter, abandoned by their  mother in a cow barn.   Kayla  had severe upper respiratory infection with discharge pouring out of her nose and eyes.  Her coat was sparse and brittle as a scouring pad.  To boost her immune system so she could fight the infection we had our master herbalist make up a respiratory tonic and along with Paws and Claws Pet Panty’s Kitty Dinner she slowly over came her health problems and gained her health.  Today her black and white coat is lush, shiny and silky soft.  Kayla shares her home with Mister the cat and two dogs, Storrie and Sarah.

  • Digger
Diggy was one of 3 kittens in a litter found in a barn at 6 weeks of age having been abandoned by their mom.  All the kittens were very sick with upper respiratory infections, but Diggy was the worst off. He also had an eye that was so grossly infected that you could not see his eye.  Diggy was in such bad shape that Alicia took him to our holistic vet who told her she did not hold out much hope for Diggy. Alicia was told to take him home and keep him comfortable and to continue to feed him Paws and Claws Pet Pantry Kitty Dinner and to hope for the best.  With proper nutrition and respiratory tonic for his chest infection he slowly recovered.  In fact he blossomed.  Much to every ones dismay his eye was re-absorbed back into the eye socket.  He is blind in that eye but that does not keep him from frolicking with the three other cats he shares a home with.

  • Bones
Bones was an adult cat weighing only 2 lbs. when he was found by Alicia.  She noticed her dogs barking at something in a field and when she investigated she found a mangy looking black cat  who had trouble walking.  When she picked him up Bones started purring.  She knew he had lots of life left in him. When his leg was checked by the vet, we realized it was broken and had to be set.  As with all of our other rescues he was immediately put on Paws and Claws Pet Pantry’s Kitty Dinner for optimal nourishment.  He healed very quickly and now weighs in at a healthy 10 lbs.

  • Bunny
Bunny was one of seven baby rabbits who had the misfortune of being born on the  well manicured grounds of a large corporation.  The landscapers  were unaware of the nest of  rabbits  when they mowed the lawn. The bunnies whose eyes were not yet open were badly hurt. Six were so badly cut that they did not survive.  Bunny was lucky, she had all of her limbs and minor cuts and bruises.  One of the landscapers knew of Alicia and took the orphaned bunny to her. Alicia nursed the bunny and fed her through a syringe. When Bunny was strong enough and old enough she was returned to the wild.

  • Peacock
Alicia’s first peacock, a male, was rescued from a backyard where he was kept caged in a 8 ft. x 6.5 ft. enclosure without a house or any shelter.  The man who owned him was angry that the peacock would not show him his feathers so he was planning on auctioning him off. When Alicia took the peacock she also took the cage to make sure he did not get another peacock.  Alicia had a huge cage built, with shelter, where he could easily move about while showing off his beautiful plumage, which he did regularly. To keep her male peacock company Alicia also purchased a female peacock, as she feels all her animals should have a companion.

  • Fancy
Fancy a gorgeous 11 yr. old red Doberman came to us at 8 months of age.  She was taken from a home where the male with ties to a motorcycle gang was trying to train her to do bite work and to be a dog feared by people.  Fortunately for us and unfortunately for him she did not have a vicious bone in her body.  Because Fancy had too sweet of a disposition he wanted to get rid of her. We were more than glad to be able to give her a stable, loving home.  Before she came to us she had never been walked and was mistreated.  When she first came to us we were not able to pet her head because she shrank away in fear.  She would lunge at men in hats and to this day she still lunges and barks at motorcycles.  Within weeks we were able to pet her head and stroke her silky soft natural ears. She loves to be petted, her favorite is her belly rubs.  For years we did therapy work together at our local hospital where she was a favorite of the children who were amazed to see a dog who loved to eat carrots in exchange for tricks.

Heart to Heart:

Our Rescues, and affiliate Rescue Organizations.

Alicia is our resident "den mother" to 30 rescued cats, 14 orphaned ducks, an iguana, 2 rabbits, a peacock, and 2 rescue dogs.  Alicia's passion for animals is evident in the care and compassion she shows towards her brood as well as the pets she is foster-mom to.
