8. What About Bacteria?

E-coli, salmonella and other bacteria are abundant in our food supply.  People can get sick and even die from bacterial infections when their immune system is compromised so it is a real concern - WHEN FEEDING HUMANS not carnivores.

Carnivores have a different digestive system than we do and are very much adept at handling bacteria rotting foods and other things that would be harmful to humans. The carnivore digestive system is very short compared to that of humans.  It is designed to get food in and out at a quick rate.  Raw food is digested between 4-6 hours. Therefore, there is less time for bacteria to sit and grow in the gut and ultimately to overwhelm their immune system.  The dog’s digestive system is five times more acidic than ours and is designed to handle bacteria readily.

Bacteria is not a problem for pets with a strong immune system.  Some types of bacteria are needed for healthy digestion.  Salmonella, e-coli and other bacteria are on many surfaces that you and your pet come in contact with daily.  Salmonella has also been found in commercial pet foods and treats.  Each time your pet grooms his/her privates, copious amounts of bacteria are ingested.

“Salmonella is not harmful to dogs,” according to a news release by the FDA.

When handling raw food for yourself or for your pets, proper hygiene practices should be followed by washing hands and working surfaces. Clean all utensils, dishes and counter tops as well as your pet’s bowls with warm soapy water to which either vinegar or bleach has been added.
