The Raw Diet:  1.     2.     3.     4.     5.     6.     7.     8.

7. Why Feed Raw Meaty Bones?

RMB provide almost every nutrient dogs and cats need for health.  Bones have the perfect ratio of calcium and phosphorous. They provide nutritious marrow, iron, protein, essential fatty acids (EFA), fiber, enzymes, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins, all in a bio-available form.  Bones contain fat soluble vitamins A, D, & E.

The MEAT (muscle and organs) provides protein, undamaged amino acids, enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins A, C, D, E ,K, B1 ,B2, B3, B5 ,B6, B12, biotin, choline, folic acid, inositol, iodine, PABA, pantothenic acid, fatty acids, calcium, copper, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc, chromium, manganese, selenium, sodium, sulfur, and co-enzyme Q10 for optimal health.

Vegetables, Grains, Organ Meats & Fruits:

Raw vegetables contain undamaged vitamins, minerals, enzymes, proteins, EFA's, fiber phytochemicals, antioxidants and water.  Both soluble and insoluble fiber in raw vegetables are essential for the prevention and treatment of obesity; for treating certain digestive tract diseases; assisting with the absorption of food and minimizing the stress on the pancreas.  The fiber and carbohydrates produced by raw vegetables are very different from those of heat processed pet foods.  While variety is important the vegetable mixture should consist of at least 60% dark leafy vegetables.

Dogs and cats can not break down the cellulose cell walls of plants.  To ensure that they obtain the maximum benefits from vegetables it is necessary to break down the cell walls for them by juicing or using the food processor.

The ingredients in our vegetable mixture vary daily, and includes 10-20 different vegetables to ensure a large variety (such as red leaf, green leaf, and romaine lettuce, bok choy, kale, zucchini, yellow and green beans, peas, broccoli, carrots, garlic, parsley, peppers, rapinni, cauliflower, Swiss chard, squash, spinach, celery, fresh herbs, beets and tops). We use as many locally grown, in season vegetables as possible.  This large array of vegetables ensures that the necessary nutrients from vegetables are supplied in your pet's diet.

  • Grains:
It is best to limit the amount of grains to less than 25% of the total diet.  There have been no levels of carbohydrate needs established in adult non-reproducing dogs. We do not use grains or fruits in our ready made meals as both break down into simple sugars on which yeast and cancer cells live and thrive.

In order for dogs to digest grains they either have to be cooked or soaked overnight in water- downed yogurt, water or broth.
  • Organ Meats:
This group of foods should comprise at most 10% of the over all raw diet.  Organ meats include gizzards, hearts( this is really a muscle meat), liver, lung and kidneys.

  • Fruits:
Fruit is high in natural sugar and moisture, and is digested very quickly.  It should not be fed with other foods as it may speed the food through the digestive tract at a faster rate than normal.

This may cause digestive upset and poor utilization of nutrients from other foods. Fruits are an excellent snack or treat for our pets, but keep in mind that they do contain sugars if your pet has cancer, yeast infections and/or intolerance, or obesity.
  • Supplements:
The combination of ground kelp and powdered alfalfa provides great nutrient and medicinal value to the diet.

  • Alfalfa:
Contains Vitamins A, B1, B3, B6, B12, C, D, E, K, U, beta carotene, biotin, folic acid, calcium, zinc, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, iron, copper, protein, trace elements and fiber.  It has antibiotic action against salmonella, a protein with anti-tumor activity.  As a general tonic, alfalfa is utilized to detoxify the body and to treat colon and bleeding disorders, diabetes, arthritis and ulcers.

  • Kelp:
Contains Vitamins A, B1, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12, C, E, zinc, biotin, bromine, calcium, choline, copper, inositol, iodine, PABA, potassium, selenium, sodium, sulfur, trace elements and fiber.  The iodine content in kelp is excellent for glands and organs like the thyroid and liver.  Kelp is utilized for goiter, arthritis, obesity, heart and circulatory disorders, hair loss, mineral deficiency, and as a general tonic.  It has anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic properties. Kelp has antibiotic properties against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) are the omega 3, 6, and 9's.  EFA's are necessary for the support of healthy joints, heart, skin and hair.  EFA's must be kept in a dark container, refrigerated or frozen and fed unheated.  Flax seed oil and fish body oils are high in omega 3 fatty acids and work synergistically with the omega 6 fatty acids found in poultry.  The cancer fighting ratio of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids is 3:1.

Vitamin C strengthens the immune system and supports collagen. It is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antihistamine.  Vitamin C is a universal antitoxin.
